IRTS Summer Fellow Year: 2012
IRTS Summer Internship: 20 West Productions

In the summer of 2012, Jasmeet Sidhu found herself in NYC alongside twenty-two other twenty-something year-olds who all shared a similar passion for the media industry. During her Fellowship, Jasmeet interned at 20 West Productions alongside 1994 IRTS alum Andy Meyer. There, Jasmeet compiled reels, met with executives, and learned all about how to pitch & produce shows.

At the end of the Fellowship, Jasmeet decided to put her newly-honed skills to the test on the West Coast. So, she set off for the California and began creating music videos for some of the biggest names in music, including Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Sia, and Selena Gomez, among others. Now, Jasmeet is the Senior Creative Producer at MasterClass, creating cinematic videos with world-class talents like Gordan Ramsay, Ron Howard, and Serena Williams. In addition to these experiences, Jasmeet has worked on news & content at Facebook, been a reporter for the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest daily newspaper, and traveled the globe covering stories such as the AIDS crisis in Africa and UN climate change negotiations in Europe.

Jasmeet is an award-winning photographer, journalist, and creative director. Whenever there wasn’t an opportunity big enough to match her ambitions, Jasmeet worked to create one. And with every accomplishment, she furthered her capabilities and enriched her experiences.

“…she would have been hard-pressed to find another opportunity quite as perfect for her media ambitions as the IRTS Summer Fellowship.”

Before all the big names and big, exciting, responsibilities, though, Jasmeet was an undergraduate student studying Peace & Conflict at the University of Toronto. Later, she earned her Master’s degree in Digital Media & Investigative Journalism at Columbia University. While pursuing her Master’s degree at Columbia, Jasmeet realized she wanted to expand her horizons and explore newer forms of media.

With her determination, hard work ethic, and creativity, Jasmeet was well-equipped to work in the industry. As a Malaysian and Canadian immigrant, however, she didn’t have the same type of media connections as many of her graduate school peers. That disparity changed drastically when she was accepted into the IRTS Summer Fellowship Program.

Although Jasmeet’s a strong believer in every opportunity being one that brings you closer to your goals, she would have been hard-pressed to find another opportunity quite as perfect for her media ambitions as the IRTS Summer Fellowship (as any of us alumni can attest!). Her advice for future Fellows is to take responsibility of forging their own career paths through hard work. Jasmeet believes in creating career momentum by turning your inexperience into the motivation needed to improve upon yourself and succeed.
